Music To Drink Martinis To

Fords Gin is setting out to prove that there is no wrong way to enjoy a martini and furthermore no wrong soundtrack to listen to while doing so. The well-traveled gin has tapped legendary music producers behind Handsome Boy Modeling School, Nathaniel Merriweather (AKA Dan The Automator) and Chest Rockwell (AKA DJ Prince Paul), to collaborate on Music to Drink Martinis To, a love letter to the iconic Martini cocktail and Fords Gin’s affinity for music.  The result is a seven-track vinyl LP with an accompanying booklet filled with martini tips, tricks and seven martini recipes from globally acclaimed bartenders.

The original Martini recipes from seven of the world’s most highly-esteemed bartenders, hailing from London, Chicago, California and Singapore. These movers and shakers have kindly shared some of their unique ways of making and serving a Martini. Their drinks are our official recommendation for you to sip while listening to this musical accompaniment.

About The Martinis

by Jesse Vida (Singapore)

FINE POINT MARTINI

2 parts Fords Gin
1/4 part Coriander Fino Sherry*
1/2 part Blanc Vermouth
Bar Spoon Float of Joven Mezcal Vida
Stir ingredients with ice into a mixing glass and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a lemon twist.

*CORIANDER FINO SHERRY
50g fresh coriander
1000ml Fino Sherry

Jesse Vida has been at the helm of one of the world’s most prestigious gin joints for the last several years. It is a place where Martinis likey flow more freely than any other bar on the planet. This creation brings in some Mezcal into the fold for added dimension on the palate. Handsome drink tip #1: Never order sherry in Bristol or you will be greeted with a big glass of Harvey’s Bristol Cream. I made this mistake one evening on a night out with Massive Attack (Simon Ford knows what I’m talking about).

UN-FORD-GETTABLE

3 parts Fords Gin
1/8 part Fino Sherry
1/8 part Italicus
Stir with ice in a mixing glass and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a
Spanish olive and a lemon peel.

Quite possibly the most highly acclaimed bartender in the world today, Ago has created a sophisticated Martini that accentuates the flavours of Fords Gin by combining it with Italian Bergamot Rosolio and Fino Sherry. Handsome drink tip #2: This is a nice twist on the classic Martini. Best enjoyed pool-side, perhaps in Portugal.

On Deck

1 1⁄2 parts Fords Gin
1/2 part Manzanilla Sherry
1/4 part Dolin Dry
1/8 part Dolin Bianco
Pinch of Salt
Build ingredients in a mixing glass. Stir with ice and strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass. Garnish with 2 olives.

This martini combines two different styles of vermouth to take things one step beyond the typical monotheism of vermouth in a Martini. The dry and sweet vermouths balance each other out while the Manzanilla adds a nutty flavour and a dry finish. Handsome drink tip #3: What’s with all this sherry? One year it’s rosé and the next it’s daiquiri’s. Be original! Sorry rant over.

KILLER BEE

5 parts Fords Gin Officers’ Reserve Navy Strength
1 part Dolin Dry Vermouth
1 part honey syrup
Stir with ice in mixing glass and strain into a coupe,
Garnish with small piece of frozen honeycomb (optional)

Sly Augustin is the proprietor of Trailer Happiness in Notting Hill Gate, London. The bar has been one of west London’s coolest high-energy underground bars since 2003. Sly’s Martini recipe employs the sweetness of honey to smooth out and complement the barrel characteristics of the Fords Gin Officers’ Reserve.

2 dashes tea infused bitters*
Bar spoon of maple syrup
Stir over ice, strain into a small frozen cocktail glass, garnish with a cube of licorice allsorts skewered on a pick (sitting above the washline)

*TEA INFUSED BITTERS
1 bottle Regan’s orange bitters
5g loose leaf black tea
2g Maldon salt

“The Martini is iconic not only as it harks to the archetypal notion of a cocktail, but also because it is so personal. It remains my favourite drink to make or share, and it contains so many parallels of my main passion – music. Each can shape or bolster the situation, and can be tweaked to reflect the perfect moment to share with one, or many! It’s easy to see a Martini as a pause, but it has enough breadth to also really channel energy, so with this in mind, instead of harking to jazz, or the tinkling of the ivories, I’ve nodded to a driving drum beat. The maple references the wood used to construct drums, the tea to my other drink love and the little pop of caffeine and vibrancy it brings, and finally a ratio that speaks to the notorious Roland TR-808, and its role in making some of my favourite music. The garnish nods to Biggie’s line “sweet like licorice”. A Martini to accompany music in all forms.” Handsome drink tip #5: I’ve never had this one but… 808 can only be 2 things-the bass machine better known as the Roland TR-808 as noted in the description or the area code for Honolulu. So, either way, that’s ok in my book.

GIN AND GINGER MARTINI

1/2 part Fords Gin
1/4 part Rihei Ginger Shochu
1 1⁄4 part Koshino Kanbai Sai Junmai Ginjo (or other crisp junmai ginjo saké)
5 drops Shiso Bitters
Stir over ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon peel.

Japanese-inspired twist on the classic martini with a lower ABV. Delicate layers of flavour are drawn from each of the ingredients which pushes forward the ginger and flavour characteristics of the gin. Handsome drink tip #6: Sake has entered the discussion. Koshino kanbai is a fine selection but don’t sleep on the Masumi.

GIN THE MARTINIMATOR

2 parts Fords Gin
1 part Cocchi Americano
1 dash Elderflower Liqueur
3 slices of English cucumber

Lightly muddle cucumber and stir with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail coupe. Garnish with a thinly sliced cucumber wheel.

This martini is crisp & clean. It takes a classic martini build of 2 parts gin to 1 part of a fortified vermouth style wine, in this case it’s a quinine flavoured aperitif wine. It is then brightened up with a little cucumber and elderflower refreshment. A delightful combination! Handsome drink tip #7: If you want to take a stroll through the meadow and look at the blue flowers, a thermos of this libation can help drown out the poetic thoughts of your traveling companion quite nicely.
