Quinine was originally drunk for health purposes.

British officers in India in the early 19th century took to adding a mixture of water, sugar, lime and gin to quinine in order to make it more palatable, thus the gin and tonic was born.
Today, we use much better quality ingredients, but the Gin and Tonic has withstood the test of time.
