Some Gimlet History
A daily ration of lime was administered by the British Royal Navy as a defense against scurvy. They sometimes also received a Gin ration which explains how the the two met to make this drink.

In 1867, Scottish fruit importer Lauchlan Rose patented a process of preserving fruit. Roses lime cordial was born and adopted by the British Royal Navy.
The name Gimlet is said to have come from a tool that was used to open barrels on board ships. There is also a story that it was named after Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette (1857-1943) who is said to have first mixed Gin with lime. Both stories are entirely plausible.
